To work with your chakras, it is important to understand that the detail practice prescribed by the ancient yogis are frame of references to be carried out precisely, serving a specific purpose. While your chakras are never really dormant because energy is always constantly moving, there are times when the energy level is either over-active or under-active. The traditional yogic practice maps out detail ways to balance them. However, many of us today interpret the traditional teachings as descriptive. For example, we all know the root chakra is at the base of our spine and that it is a four petals lotus, that's a description (see red image). The traditional teachings were never meant it to be that. Instead, they tell us what we ought to do is to understand what the four petals lotus represent (See pink image) and develop a practice of visualizing of an object with a certain color spinning in a unique shape, producing a certain sound, to achieve certain spiritual growth.
