Are you ready for this? The popular seven-chakras system did not come from ancient yogic teachings. It's origins date back to the 1500s, written by a guy in Sanskrit which was later translated into English about 100 years ago. However, I must note here that this seven-chakra system can be found in various forms in many different lineages. It is true that you can find it being mentioned in several diverse elaborate versions of the same system. Therefore, yes it has been a dominate system for the last few centuries. At the same time, it is also true that the westernized seven-chakras was based on a loosely translated version of its original Sanskrit source. Again, I want to reemphasize here that I am not trying to invalidate it, I am merely trying to correct this misunderstanding about the history behind this popular system so many of us practice.
